A number of family medicine department faculty members, as well as family physicians in the community, participate in the Society for Medicine Decision Making. We meet informally at the annual SMDM meeting, to become acquainted and exchange information.
If you would like to network with other family physicians and family medicine department faculty interested in medical decision making, you may contact any of the people listed at the bottom of this page.
Faculty interested in teaching concepts of medical decision making to
students or residents would be interested in the SMDM Education Interest group, as well as the curriculum outline developed by SMDM.
Some family medicine faculty have found it very useful to participate in faculty development programs that address how to teach medical decision making concepts, such as Stanford Faculty Development Program's Medical Decision Making Program, Annual Evidence Based Medicine Workshop, McMaster University, or the Annual course on Teaching Information Mastery: An Evidence Based Approach to Medical Education, in Charlottesville VA.
Those interested in doing research using medical decision making concepts are encouraged to:
- Attend the SMDM annual meeting,
- Read the MDM journal,
- Identify such projects in the family medicine literature and contact their authors, such as:
Bergus GR, Lofgren MM. Tubes, antibiotic prophylaxis, or watchful waiting: a decision analysis for managing recurrent acute otitis media. J Fam Pract. 1998;46(4):304-10
Barry HC, Ebell MH, Hickner J. Evaluation of suspected urinary tract infection in ambulatory women: a cost-utility analysis of office-based strategies. J Fam Pract. 1997;44(1):49-60
Cantor SB, Spann SJ, Volk RJ, Cardenas MP, Warren MM. Prostate cancer screening: a decision analysis. J Fam Pract. 1995;41(1):33-41
- Consult the following family medicine web cites addressing cost
effectiveness or decision analytic research
- Clinical Decision Making Calculators
- Michigan Consortium for Family Practice Research,
- College of Family Physicians of Canada's Pearls: an Evidence Based Practice Reflection Exercise
