ABSTRACTS

All accepted abstracts will be presented as 4' X 4' POSTERS, during one or both of the conference poster sessions:

Wednesday Morning Poster Session - SMDM members only may submit abstracts for consideration in this session. Please see SMDM CONFERENCE SITE for submission details. These abstracts may ALSO be considered for presentation at the Wednesday evening poster session by submitting the abstract to Grace Garey as described below, in addition to submission to SMDM.

Wednesday Evening Poster Session - All conference participants may submit abstracts for this session, which will be held during the DEM Conference Reception.

The poster sessions will provide a forum for participants to discuss research and ideas related to clinical reasoning and diagnostic error in medicine. Suitable topics would include research related to diagnostic error (both completed and planned), observations related to medical misdiagnosis, and reviews or perspectives on clinical reasoning and\or ideas to reduce system-related or cognitive error, including informatics solutions.

Submit all abstracts to be considered for the Wednesday Evening Poster Session to grace.garey@va.gov (631 261-4400 ext 2667) by August 5th. Abstracts will be reviewed and approved on a rolling basis as received.

Please include a poster title, a one paragraph summary (250 words or less) summarizing the project and lessons learned, the names, academic affiliations and titles, location (city and state) of all authors and email and telephone contact information for the corresponding author

CASE VIGNETTES

Residents, Chief Residents, and fellows are intimately familiar with the complexity of clinical reasoning and the many opportunities for error. To encourage trainees to be more directly engaged in understanding and solving this problem, we invite you to submit a case vignette that describes a case of diagnostic error. These cases should be chosen and the content organized for a poster presentation that illustrates lessons and insights related to the conference theme.

These vignettes will be presented as a 4' x 4' poster along with research posters at the Wednesday evening opening reception for review and discussion by the conference attendees, including the thought-leaders in this field.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • The vignette should be 1 single-spaced typed page of 12 point text and may include up to 2 visual items beyond the 1 page limit.
  • The vignette should include just 2 sections: "Case", and "Lessons".
  • The title should identify whether the diagnosis was missed, wrong, or delayed (eg: MISSED Diagnosis of Aortic Dissection in an Elderly Patient).
  • Please also include your name, academic affiliations and titles, location (city and state), and email plus telephone contact information.
  • Vignettes and inquiries should be forwarded by email to grace.garey@va.gov (631 261-4400 ext 2667) by August 5th.
  • Residents with accepted vignettes will be responsible for travel and hotel expenses, but conference registration fees will be waived.
