Health Economist/Decision Scientist

The Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICIER) at the Massachusetts General Hospital is seeking a Lead Decision Scientist. ICER works with clinicians, patients, manufacturers, and insurers to assess the comparative effectiveness of new medical procedures, devices, and drugs. ICER assessments are intended to enhance public dialogue about health care priorities while giving patients, physicians, and insurers the kind of tools they need to seek better value. Under direction of the Chief Review Officer, the Lead Decision Scientist will spearhead the structural development and/or modification of decision-analytic models examining the cost-effectiveness of new and emerging healthcare technologies.

Responsibilities include:

  • Structural development of decision-analytic models and/or modification of existing models
  • Coordination with academic and other health-economic experts on model conceptualization, scope, and definition
  • Oversight of research and estimation of all model parameters, using both published and unpublished sources
  • Conduct of all relevant programming activities, including model development, calibration and validation, testing, and debugging
  • Conduct of all model simulations and analyses, including specification and conduct of one-way, multi-way, and probabilistic sensitivity analyses
  • Preparation of presentations and relevant reports for economic component of ICER technology appraisals
  • Development of online and/or application-based interactive versions of models, including all aspects of coding, testing, and debugging

Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher in decision sciences or another relevant discipline (e.g., health economics, outcomes research)
  • Extensive experience with decision-analysis software (e.g., TreeAge, PrecisionTree)
  • Extensive experience with interactive application programming languages (e.g., VisualBasic, Java, ColdFusion)

US Senior Manager of Medical Outcomes Research and Economics

Research Directors, Behavioral Research Center

The Behavioral Research Center (BRC) of the American Cancer Society (ACS) is currently seeking Directors in the following areas: 1) Health Communications (information technology, risk communication, decision making, health literacy); 2) Health Behaviors (physical activity, diet, screening); and 3) Family Studies. The successful candidates will be key players in developing and managing research projects in these areas as they relate to cancer prevention, early detection, and cancer survivorship. The ACS National Home Office is located in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition, the organization also has 13 regional/state divisions, more than 3,400 local offices, and over 3 million volunteers. The ACS has been a major player in cancer research for over 80 years. The BRC, an intramural research program of the Society, is part of the Research Department, which also includes the Department of Epidemiology and Surveillance Research, the Statistics and Evaluation Center, the Extramural Grants Program, and the Research Promotion and Communications Department. The expanding BRC staff includes 20 full time doctoral, masters and bachelors’ level scientific and support staff.

These positions require a PhD, MD, or equivalent degree with a publication history in health communications, health behaviors or family studies.. We are currently interested in applicants at all levels of seniority (assistant, associate, full professor level). Our working environment promotes teamwork.

The position, available immediately, reports to the Vice President of Behavioral Research. Salary is commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications and experience. 5 Full-time Nonacademic Fellowships

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has up to five fellowship slots in the Prevention Effectiveness (PE) Fellowship program for 2009. Fellows will design and conduct studies in areas of applied economics, health services research, economic evaluations of public health interventions, and quantitative policy analyses; work closely with national and international public health experts; and teach courses in prevention effectiveness methods. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in economics, decision sciences, health services research or related health sciences, industrial engineering, operations research, public policy, or related quantitatively-oriented fields. The Fellowship begins at the end of June 2009 and lasts for 2 years. The starting annual salary will be approximately $70,000 plus benefits.
